    bike stand

just picked up a bike stand at northern, the kind that looks like a bent paper clip, not sure what they are called.
just holds the back wheel off the ground.
put it together and could not find where the lift attaches to the back of the bike to raise it up.
on the left side, was a few places but not enough to grab onto
on the right, the muffler was in the way.
did i buy the wrong thing or is there something i missing?

A picture is worth a thousand words. There are so many variations of rear stands it is impossible to comment. Also what model bike would be helpful.

look up the parts diagram on www.bikebandit.com

if this is on an 850, the spring attaches to the forward, at the bottom of the frame cross-bar, in the centre just below the back of the engine

I have a Lockhart stand that works well. I have an attachment that allows you to lift the front end too.

          billy, great pix

          that's it, the white one
just not sure where i can attach it to the rear of the bike (1980 gs850) to lift it off the ground.

the left side is open but not much room, but on the right, the muffler is in the way. is there something i am missing.

Sorry if this is obvious for you, not sure if you've used this type of stand before. That's a swingarm stand commonly used on for late model sportbikes. You lift up the rear of the bike by placing those black bits under either side of the swingarm and then press down on the "U" shaped handle on the top of the stand.

Once the bike's on the stand it'll look something like this:
