I'm checking the valve clearance on my 82 GS850G. I removed and reinserted the shims to check size and clearance. One of the shims is stuck and I cannot get it out with a small screw driver. Any tips here? Thanks.

Are there any signs of corrosion or any other reason it might be stuck? They can get a good suction going with just engine oil. A few of mine needed some gentle tapping on the back of the screwdriver. I think I used the ratchet, since it was handy. Other times I pushed on the back of the screwdriver while turning it to lift the shim. If you've already tried those, you need to hear from someone with more experience than me.Dogma

Does the shim move around when you push it with the screwdriver? If so, then the top of the bucket might be peened over or try grinding and old flat screwdriver down to a sharp edge and remove the shim at the notch in the bucket, TedComment

For some reason I was unable to locate this first post, so I made the second. Doesn't bode well for my mechanical aptitude, now does it?
The shim does not move around. Tapping on the back did not move it. The shim bucket still rotates, so it makes me think the shim is in slightly crooked. At this point, I'm thinking I'll bite the bullet and fire her up and see if that shakes the shim loose.
By the way, clearance on the intake & exhaust valves on cylinder #4 was non-existent. Couldn't even get a 1000th of an inch through. I guess a compression test is the best way to ascertain if this truly bad.Comment

Bills right. You want that shim out without applying any extra pressure to it. If the shim is cock eyed then tap it back into the recess and try again. Someone might have used an oversized shim and it is jammed in the bucket. If all else fails remove the camshaft and pull the bucket and work on it on the work bench. If worst comes to worst, you may have to remove the cam to get it out. Not the end of the world. I agree, don't start the bike until resolved.
I have a set of small metal picks with various curves/angles at the tips. They are great for removing the shims because I can come at them from different angles with the various picks.

Its no big job to lift the cams out and remove the bucket and shim . Then you can check the bucket fir damageComment
