    Tear down pics.

    Hello All,
    I just uploaded a ton of pics of my 78' GS1000E in various stages of tear down. I'm a newb to motorcycle wrenching and did not cross reference my pics to the service manual so if anyone wants to take a look and properly name some of what we're looking at it would be welcome. I thought the close ups would be helpful for the re-assembly after clean up and repair this summer. Check my profile to see the gallery.

    Hi Mr. Phaseman,

    That's looking like a pretty thorough refresh. While you've got it apart, are you going to (A) rebuild the cam chain tensioner, (B) replace the carb intake boots and O-rings, (C) check/replace chain and sprockets, (D) replace brake lines, (E) rebuild calipers, (F) check valve clearances, (G) rebuild carbs, etc, etc? You're going to have a pretty sweet ride when you put it back together. Keep us informed of your progress. How was it running before the tear down?

        Thanks Nessism and Basscliff,
        How far I will take it depends on $$$ alone. I'd like to do all that stuff you listed Basscliff. My wife's a killer researcher/bargain hunter. As I tear it down I am listing all of the desired parts/tools. I'll give that to my lady in reverse order and put it back together as budget permits. It was running pretty good until... I haven't had time to post all events in my blog yet but as a preview of blog entries to come...

        When i first got her running I had a bad cylinder miss - clogged jet found and repaired.

        Ran pretty well after that but I have nothing to compare full performance with. A buddy that owns an auto shop helped me track the clogged jet, and he says that the thing will scare the @#$@ outta me when I get her tuned.

        Then came the impound for riding her while awaiting a copy of my birth cert. to get my endorsement - 300.00 find now totals 780.00 after ticket, impound fees etc. Would have MUCH rather spent that money on parts. After getting her out of impound apparently the sling job on the tow truck sloshed a bunch of garbage around in the tank and clogged her up pretty bad, ran like doo doo after that. Thats why the early in the season tear down.

            See my PM. You can expect to spend close to $1k for new tires, chain and sprocket, carb parts, intakes, etc, etc and a new tank. I don't think you can pound that one out.

            But it sound like you can do most of the work yourself.

              Please dont do it on the cheap, it will bite you later on , replace all engine seals & o;rings change the o;rings in the oil pump, check the valve seats many dont seal properly get them re cut if required , check the clutch basket for wear weak point on 2v GSs you can buy rebuild kits, just take your time

                Yeah, the original owner did a couple of upgrades apparently. He also switched it over to electronic ignition, and the guy I bought it from said something about the original owner having removed the fork springs. I don't know why he would have done that and I haven't broken into them yet. It seems to me that the forks dive to full compression pretty easily. I've pumped em' up to 13.5 psi but haven't rechecked for leakage yet.

                  Thanks for the tips fast pom, how difficult a project is a clutch rebuild on one of these from 1 to 10? As a back yard mechanic I'm probably a 6 or 7 but with a motorcycle wrenching experience rating of 0 to 1.

                    Prob best left to expert requires the rivets removing replace reweld
