    Dare I say "whatever your manual suggests"?

    Seriously, if you don't have a manual, there is a LOT of stuff you shouldn't be messing with.
    Hopefuly you have one on the way.
    Actually, you can download a manual from BassCliff's little site.

    Now, to finally answer your question:
    here is a snip from page 208 of the pdf on BassCliff's site (actually page 7-24):

      Z = 1982

      There was no 550E in the US market for 1982. Are you in some other market or could this bike be one of the later 16V models?

        I had an 82 GS550EZ a while back - fitted with anti-dive, last model before the major changes to the GSX550. The manual that Steve linked to is for the GSX550 so the key is where are you?

        (The Yanks call the GSX a GS - I reckon the Japs didn't believe that they could get so far down the alphabet).

        If you're in the US Steve's info is probably correct, if you're in Europe it's wrong.

        For the European model the oil level is 140mm from the top of the stanchion, fork fully compressed and springs removed. Standard oil is 15W though I used 20W after some experimentation
