How do i adjust the front brakes on a 1982 850 gs L

There's nothing to adjust. Make sure your brake pads aren't worn out, lube the sliders, bleed the brakes and go. If the bike has been sitting up a while the caliper and/or master cylinder piston may not be sliding freely. In that case you'll have to remove the pistons and clean them up, as well as the bore, with fine steel wool and reassemble. With a little luck the seals will hold and you'll be good to go.

sometimes the master cylinder needs to be removed from the H-bar to get air bubbles un-trapped and to the highest level.

I got a much firmer feel by also changing the fluid, and changing the lines to stainless. I don't think that counts as adjustment, though I'd recommend it for safety. Still don't know what the OP's trying to fix though.
