You can use 520 sprockets with either a 525 or 530 chain, but the sprocket is narrower than the chain rollers which will result in faster wear on the sprocket than would be the case if the sprocket matched the chain.

I disagree

A 520 sprocket is narrower than a 525 or 530 but the chain pitch is the same. The chain will fit over the sprocket and will not bind. To be honest here I don’t have personal experience with this mod, just quoting an information source on the internet that seems to make sense.

Sometimes the next grade up in strength is just a wider chain. 428 and 428H are the same pitch, but 428H is a bit wider and stronger. 520, 525 and 530 are like that too. Pitch is the distance between two roller centers. Having the same pitch means they will all fit on the thinner sprocket. 520, 525, and 530 will all fit on a 520 sprocket, but a 530 sprocket will only fit 530 chain. thank you the reason is I have a beuatifull 525 o ring chain and i have a gs 500 with 520 sprockets that needs a chain

For grins a while back when installing a new chain on my GSXR I test fitted my old 525 GSXR chain on my new 520 GSXR sprockets. It fit, at least as chain rollers go, but the side to side slop from the width difference was pretty bad. Not recommended, get a 520 chain.

The reasons for my disagreeing nessim .......

rollers on a 530 chain are a bigger diameter than on 520 or 525 & do not fit properly into the smaller sprockets

the idea of using a mix of 520 & 525 chains/ sprockets came from the track, it was a way of slightly reducing friction/ drag, fine for 6 laps before throwing it all away but not really a good idea for thousands of miles

so my opinion is use chains & sprockets of matching sizes & stay safe

I agree with using matching sprockets and chains and I’m sorry if my comments lead anyone to think I endorse using a narrower than proper sprockets.

I disagree with your comment about the roller being a different diameter though; they are the same diameter but different widths. The issue with using the narrow sprocket is as 80GS1000 stated, the wider chain will be able to slide around side to side.

just to clarify & its only from memory it believe the 520 & 525 rollers are the same size but the 530 are bigger, i could be wrong so would appreciate someone getting the verniers calipers out

just looked it up for myself & its 530 & 532 with the different sized rollers, its my age you know easilly confused
