It had a thin paper gasket on it. I guess I should just apply some silicone gasket and go on. The bike had been sitting in a barn since 88. I took the cover off to rotate the motor.

Don't put silicone on that, or anywhere else on your GS.
It's perfectly OK to run it with no gasket. The paper one maybe keeps out the rain a little better, but it's not essential at all.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Did some repair work on a '92 Kawasaki ZX6 recently and the signal generators were covered with oil. I paniced for a moment thinking the crankshaft seal had let go until I realized that the signal generators are exposed to engine oil - like the stator on our GS bikes.
Just my opinion but I'd get a gasket for that cover. The mechanical advance mechanism is not plated or anything so it's best to keep it dry the way Suzuki intended. If you don't have a gasket just cut your own from gasket paper. Should only take a few minuets.Ed
