How strong are the stock sprocket bolts?

How strong are the stock sprocket bolts?
How strong are the 6 bolts the hold the sprocket to the carrier? I read an article that the yoshimura GS1000 snapped all the sprockets bolts at laguna back in 1980. Are these bolts weak? Would upgrading to maybe 10.9 or 12.9 class bolts be beneficial or stronger? Just wondering.Tags: None

Just a guess.

And I have a sneaking suspicion that the Yosh bikes had a wee bit more power trying to shear those bolts than most of us mere mortals have available.

I doubt you are making the power those race bikes made. If you are then I would get stronger bolts. Also, the fact that your bolts have lasted this long without breakage would indicate that they are not the weak point in the system...

I was just wondering, The article said that yosh bike changed to a larger diameter more bolt hole pattern after this problem. I was just wondering since I have my wheels apart. My stock bolts look fine, Im just putting a more powerful engine in now. But I wont be drag racing, just romping on it alot. I would guess the drive cushions take alot of the vibration/impact out of this area.

I had a wee dirtbike back in the 80s and its 100 cc engine and my insanity bent its sprocket studs
my sad little 550 shows nary a visible change in site of my launching off stop lights against pathetic posers in low buck Camaros light to light
oh that was fun them in there heavy cars almost always with a 305 or some god waful detuned POS engine
did the dame against a friend in a camaro with and LT1 350
he had to hit his breaks hard to stop from killing me in the top end
I still see the increasing frequency in the refelction off the superstructure of the bridge we were racing on as he more than made up for my light weight with sheer HP
crazy and irresponsible

Considering six 1/4" bolts would hold the flywheel to the torque converter in old V8 cars, I got a feeling that the bolts holding my sprocket on are plenty strong. To shear bolts takes more juice than any bike could generate. I go for the overtorqued bolts which were close to breaking anyway.

Theres a fella on another site i use who's been running a 240bhp turbo gs1000 for about 4 years on the the stock bolts so tbh i dont think you will have a problem
