GS850 BS to VM type carbs?

Is it straightforward to stick VM32s on a 1980 850 with the regular CV style carbs?

    #2
VM32's? Do you mean VM33 smoothbores? In either case that is too much throat area for an 850. The 1979 850 had VM26 carbs - with the small port head. The ports opened up in 1980 to match the larger CV carbs but no way the engine can suck hard enough to pull air though 33mm VM carbs.

The best way to hop up a GS850 is to remove the the gas cap, push a GS1000 or a GS1100 under it, and then replace the cap.

...and at that point...throw in those carbs.

Those look like factory VM carbs of some type. How did you come up with VM32? As far as I know the largest factory type VM carbs were 28mm and came on certain Kawasaki models. As stated before, VM26's were used on everything other than the 550's, which had 22's.

The VM carbs as single carbs went up to VM40 and beyond - I'm not sure of biggest carbs in a bank of 4 as standard, but probably low 30s.

Some of the UK GS1000s got VM28s and the some GS1000STs got VM30s. Are you sure you are measuring the carbs in the right place ie internal bore, cylinder head side? (Carbs actually measure slightly larger than they are listed eg VM28s are 28.9mm across the bore).

1979 was the only year that the GS850 used VM carbs.
If you want to use VM's on a later model, you'll have to swap the head.
                      It's not worth the trouble.

Send me those CVs and I'll get you a good usable rack.
The VMs won't fit on your head.
