    What is this stuff??

    Hello again,
So I have finally removed the stator cover on my 82 gs850L. In the process a big chunk of metal fell out. It looks like a bunch of metal flake all stuck together in a flat almost screenlike fashion. There is a good bit more of this flaky stuff on the opposite side of the cover behind the rotor/flywheel. (sorry I don't know what to call it).

Sorry I don't have any pictures.

I am thinking its just metal flake thats come off from the teeth of the 3 different wheels inside there. But the teeth all look really good and not worn.

Should I remove the crank and rotor to clean it all out? Or should I just leave it alone? Is removing the crank a big deal? What sort of things should I look out for?

    Thanks again,
    David

It might be the shellac flaking off the stator. Is it a dark reddish colour, Ted

Its covered in oil so it looks black, but its definitely a vary dark color. I took a closer look at it and it really looks like fiberglass.

Lets assume for a minute that it is this stator shellac. What would it mean to have it flaking off like it is?

      Thanks,
      David

I don't think it has any effect on the stator operating properly. Best is to test the stator, If it is a Suzuki stator I would get a backup stator from Electrosport just in case, Ted

If you were especially rough in pulling it off, you might have knocked some of it off. From what I understand, it isn't terribly important. Some of these guys wind their own stators, and they've made them with and without shellac.

I'm trying to think of what else in that area could fit your description, since we are pictureless. The insulation that covers the stator wires from the coil all the way to the connectors is a black woven looking sheath. When my stator fried, it burned off some of the insulation, but I didn't find any floating around. Are you missing any?

no the sheathing is good. after further inspection I am inclined to think its this shellac stuff. The problem is all that is left is lots of random little pieces. Its hard to tell if they were a part of something else and where that something else is supposed to be.

I'll use a rag to clean the stuff out and go from there. Thanks for brainstorming with me.
