dont know where to turn next 81 gs 850

im totally lost now .pulled the carbs replaced all the orings intake boots orings . pulled them apart again everything is clean and no blocked passages.set the floats at .88 reinstalled everything sealed everything .still will idle all day long with the choke on you go to give it gas soon as you touch the throttle it dies or turn the choke off like its out of gas .i couldnt find any cracks in the diaphrams when you blow in the port in the back of the carb the slides move up and down normally.when chopping the throttle trying to coax up the rpms you can hear the loud bog when the slides open ive tried it with the tank on and an external fuel supply can not find any leaks wd 40 .the plugs look sooty but not wet im going to replace them after dinner. spark is whitish on cyl 1 and 4 i think its from the soot . the only other thing i can think is to raise the float levels the floats . its like its out of gas . im pulling whats left of my hair out .open for suggestions .
a little about the bike dont know if it will help . the former owner was on his way home to atlanta from orlando.the stater went out he drove it till it died .there was nothing wrong with the carbs he pulled them and cleaned them when he replaced the stator empty no fuel in them the bike sat for 2 or 3 years afterwards he had a back injury

Did you plug up the vacuum line for the fuel petcock?

Is the airbox installed? Won't run above idle without some restriction ahead of the carbs.

Do you have the airbox on the bike? It won't run properly without the airbox and all the hoses sealed up tight. When you pulled the carbs did you verify the pilot jets are open by holding them up to the light?

all the jets are clean airbox is on everything sealed vac line plugged . it wont run off the idle circuit either .doesnt backfire or anything like its not sucking any fuel . you know when your gas is of and it stalls any you start it up with the choke is on i runs but not enough gas to give it any throttle thats what its like . i guess i should get a bolt drill a hole in it put a hose on it and check the float levels the old fashond way

You've changed tanks as a trial and nothing changed so the petcock shouldn't be an issue. Were you using an inline filter on both set ups? If so, it could be restricting your fuel flow.

But, if the PO told you that he rode it with a crook stater until it died, the plugs would have sooted up badly, due to poor quality spark. If you are still using these plugs, try replacing them and see how it runs. Badly carbon fouled plugs will break down once the load is increased. I would expect some misfiring to occur under these conditions (when the throttle is wacked open).

Further considerations. Primary jet passages and needle height positions?

Pilot jets open? Hold them up to a light to make sure the orifice is open?

got it fixed installed the carbs tonight the floats were tweeked and the holes where the pins go thru were oblong .im not sure if the guy before me didnt know how to ajust the levels or what. i know enough to whenever someone has been in the carbs before me to do more inspection on the floats spent about 2.5 hrs working on the floats after making a level checker noticed they were low and when put a few lbs pressure on the fuel is would rise slowly. ran it without the airbox will install tomorrow but could turn off the choke and it would take throttle slowly. i also recleaned everything again didnt see anything visually clogged but who knows thanks to everyone for their input i checked everything that everyone said

Your problem sounds alot like what I'm experiencing with my '83 850l. What exactly did you do? Were your floats set too high or too low?

mine were to low i set them at .88 but was to low 1 float was higher then the other so had to bend it an keep checking it the hole for the pin used needle nose put the pin in the float before so you wont get it closed to far its a pain if it gets to tight you can use a small pick to get it back in shape. do yourself a favor while your in there replace all the orings its cheap and do the intake orings . the orings on the idle circuit were really flattend they all are less then 20 bucks i never touched the idle ajusting screw but it idled about 2k after replacing everything . and like someone said in another reply to my post definately clean the piolets the hole in the bottom of the jet is so tiny and clogs really easily . i ended up taking a bread tie stripping the paper off it and taking it to the grinder and grinding it to a point it was to big for that little hole .on bikecliffs website they tell you wow to make a tool . like i said in my post i suspect it was the floats causing the problem but i cleaned the heck out of everything for the 3rd time and thats all that matters good luck dave
