    Dribble - crankshaft oil seal

    Hey fellas,

    Waiting around for parts, thought I'd look at couple of other nagging little problems. I just posted some photos of my dribbling crankshaft oil seal and wanted to know if anyone's ever replaced this part or has any tips?

    I have the part I need - I'm just a smidge afraid of prying the old one out.

    I'd be nervous prying that out as well. You might want to send RenoBruce a PM, he replaced that seal on new engine build after the crankcases were bolted together.

      Drive in a fat screw, pull it out with vice grips?
      I would start the hole with something other than a drill (hammer in a nail, etc) to avoid steel particles getting inside the crankcase.

        A piece of PVC pipe from the hardware store works good to drive the new seal in. Grease the seal lip. Coat the outer with non hardening gasket sealer- helps it slide in !!

          Good lead, thanks. Yeah I read through that thread and couldn't seem to find the happy ending, so I PM'd Bruce. One guy in there had done the installation successfully and it seems the main trick would be finding/making a suitable driver.

          Meanwhile, Bruce's description of his extraction method didn't calm my nerves any, but if that's what it takes, so be it.

          I'm picturing a DIY puller with a bar, a couple of long machine screws, and some small holes drilled in the old part, but maybe I'm overcomplicating things to remove a part I'm just going to toss in the trash. All I really care about is not damaging the metal sealing surfaces of the block and crank.

            The crank bearing is right behind that seal so if you drill or shoot a screw into the seal don't go very deep.

              OK, cool. Tkent02's screw + vicegrips is maybe the compromise I was looking for. An I like the PVC idea for the driver - certainly plenty of sizes to chose from.

              And this isn't a rebuild, so what about the oil? Is it center stand and no problem, side stand, or drain all/some oil for this repair to keep from making a big mess?

                    I did mine on an 86 550es. On the center stand. Sheet rock screw and vise grips to remove old one and a big socket to install it back in place. No biggie on mine.

                    Have put about 2000 miles on mine since then. No more issues.

                    The bearing is right there. Be careful.
