    1982 gs 850 l gear problem!

    Hello everybody.
    I have I think a serious problem.
I was on the road today and i stoped at a red light.
i had it neutral. light turn green and i shfted to gear i started moving and i heard a noise then the biked seem to jump out of gear.
I tried putiing in gear and the gear indicator says it is in first but i did not get any power. bottom line is i had to get towed. bummer.
WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM AND IS IT HARD TO FIX.
THE ENGINE runs great it goes into gears but with no power tranfer.
    hope you guys can help.

It's the splines in the rear wheel.

Happens to every '82-83 GS shaftie.

New splines are about $90-$100 from Suzuki brand new (they're an updated part that is far more durable).

You could also look for a rear wheel from any 79-80 Suzuki shaftie and steal the splines from it. The early model spline units are also more durable.

Search the forum for splines and you'll find lots of info.

You learn something everyday, never knew about it, always thought the G's had a bullet proof bottom end, my GS 1000G has just over 376 000KM and no trouble at all, it is coming up for a "from the frame up" make over, so I will be sure to check the condition of the splines, thanx.

As bwinger stated in his post, the splines are in the rear wheel, not in the "bottom end". Check the links posted for more information.

The GS1000G has the old-fashioned wheel splines, which last much longer than the ones that came on the 82 and 83 GS850G and GS1100G.

Check your splines on your 1000G next time you have the wheel out. Remove the spline set from the rear wheel, prying it out completely. If this piece is black, you have the better spline set. If it's bronze, then you have the newer, worse set of splines.

Examine the teeth and make sure they're not worn out. It's easy to tell.

The old and the new are interchangeable. On my last GS bike, an 84 GS1100GK, I used the old-style splines, and they lasted for thousands of miles with no trouble. I sold the bike to another GSR member, and I haven't heard of any spline trouble from him.

Remove the rear wheel and look at the splines. If you go back in this thread and click the link others have provided you will find photos of what the problem looks like.

The splines that strip out are the ones in the wheel, not on the final drive. You have to clean out the grease with a q-tip and use a light to look past the very ends of the teeth. You'll also find bits of metal in there.

The softer gold-colored splines found in some '81 models and all '82 & '83 GS shafties are the problem. The earlier splines are matte black in color and are known to be very durable.

The later splines are also known to be very durable, and they are a silvery color. This part is still in use to this day on the Boulevard C50 cruisers, and was also used on the VX800, GSX1100G, and all Intruder 700-800 cruisers. If you order a new one from Suzuki, you'll get the updated part.
