82 gs650l coil problem
I have a coil only reading 11 kohms on the secondary side. The primary side reads 5 ohms. According to the manual this coil is bad. The other reads 30 kohms and 5 ohms respectivly so it is ok. since it appears I have to buy new coils I was interested in the upgrade I have seen mentioned on this site. I am new to this site/bike as I found te GS650L sitting in a barn where it has been since 1988. I have rebuilt/ cleaned the carbs, replaced intake orings, cleaned air box, replaced the air filter, cleaned tank, added fuel filter, replaced petcock, lubricated everything and changed oil and filter. I tried starting yesterday and it ran for 5 min(after many tries) and died. 1 and 4 pipes were much cooler then 2-3. Bike will not start now which made me start checking ignition system.jimTags: None

Dyna coils are popular. Most people get the Green coils for a bike like yours. Z1 Enterprises sell them.
Before spending all that money though I suggest you do some wire tracing to make sure the harness is not the problem. Standard procedure is to switch the coils, right for left, and see if the problem follows.
Good luck.Ed

I'll check all connections on the ignition circuit. $120 for new coils wow! just curious, the green dyna say 3 ohm but the book range is 3 to 5. Why would the 5 ohm not be a closer match. Like I said i'm not very knowledgeable on igniton issues. All help is appreciated. I could Not have performed the work I have without this and basscliffs site.thanks

Used coils are an option. Lots of people have spares, include me (I think).Ed

You want the 3 ohm dyna coils. Using coils with a higher resistance (ie. 5ohms) could damage your cdi unit. Typically the 5 ohm coils are for bikes with points. From what I remember, when testing the secondary resistance you check it by measuring the resistance through the plug wires. Maybe your plug wires are bad. I agree with Nessism before replacing both the coils you might want to replace the suspect one with a used one. Someone on this forum probably has one for a reasonable price.

What I meant to say is that using a coil with a lower resistance than spec could damage the cdi. I must have had a senior moment

I have a couple of good coils. I stole the wiring off them for my Dyna coils but left enough wire to connect the wires from your old coils.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

used coils
I'm interested in your used set? How much do you want for them? I easily took the plug wires off the bad coil of mine by removing the epoxy on the wire at the coil and then they pulled out easily. The were just pressed in! The plug wires should replace easy. Bt the way I still got only 11 ohms when I placed leads across the terminals inside the coil (confirmed it is bad). I was checking voltage drop on the connections and the across the ignition switch has the biggest drop (~0.5V)?

My coils do not have leads on them, it has clips on the primary side? Sounds like yours coils are different?

If you have an 82 they will be the same unless yours were switched out.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
