gs1000 tool kit info please

Hi All...
Bike is missing the tool kit. Am interested in getting a list of essential tools to make my own...any tips from you veterans would be much appreciated.

ps...mine is an 1981...are modern kits still applicable? Available from the dealer?

Tool kits come up on ebay fairly regularly but they are not cheap. Worth checking out if you want to stay origional.

GS's don't need tool kits.....they don't break down

But if you insist, a star and flat screwdriver, metric sices 8,10,12,14,17 cover most of the bolts and nuts on the GS, and a pair of pliers.
You can carry some electrical wire, duct tape a few nylon zip ties, they fix everything and a can of goo to inflate the tire, should you get a flat.

Probably the best tool to have is a cell phone when you break down so you can call a tow truck

Get Japanese-type Phillips screwdrivers, big and small. North Amerocan metric Phillips spec is a little different, does not fit quite right, and leads to stripped screw heads. Several threads on here mention where you get them.

Get the tools to remove the wheels - practice a couple of times.

10, 12, and 14 mm wrenches take care of most things, but a big wrench may be needed for the axle nut. And you'll need pliers to remove the cotter pin from same.


The oil drain plug is the same size as the spark plug socket size.

Find an owners manual. Theres a picture of the orig tool kit toward the back of the book.

I wonder what you get for 36.00 ? I think sears has a nice selection for that much.

When I travel, I take :

1. Small multimeter
2. Elec. tape
3. Hex wrenches
4. pliers with wire cutter
5. small crescent wrench
6. 9-19 mm sockets and 3/8 swivel head
7. 24 mm tool for axle nut removal
8. Elec wire & extra fuses
9. Flat fixer (it may or may not work - but it's worth a try).
10. Flat and Phillips screw drivers.

Not tool kit exactly, but covers the bases.

Yes, I'd like to carry that stuff too, but my bike has no trailer hitch, so I can't tow a trailer to haul all that stuff in. Don't get an original tool kit unless you have a show bike & want to keep everything original. Those are the most usless tools I've ever had in my hands. Get the things mentioned & make your own kit, but please not the original junky stuff. Sorry for trashing Suzuki stuff, it's not just theirs all the rice burner tool kits are like that, they are almost like tools from a little kids toy tool set.
