OK, what do you think? Off an '83 1100G shaftie with 39k miles on ....looks like maybe the teeth are worn about 40%. Another 20k miles left with proper lube?

Hi, I have owned a motorcycle business for 29 years, and I'm here to say, you have all kinds of life left in that set-up! I have seen WAY worse and they went on and on. When you assemble it, just be sure to grease it in good shape, I would not worry about it in the least.....Bob

If you need the bike running now, lube it up and re-fit it. You should get another 10k out of it. Order a later model ring (silver in colour) or source an earlier one off a '79-'81 850 or 1000 (black in colour).
Great pics. Handy to know how many miles to expect from one of those gold splined rings. You should be feeling a bit more lash in the drive when changing from decel to throttle with that amount of wear!:) The road to hell is paved with good intentions......................................

You have some wear left, but I'm not sure I would button it back up like that. You've already done the work to remove it - just get a newer (or older) hub and replace it now. You won't have to think about it again. This advice is of course if you live somewhere you can get a replacement easily.

Great pics! Ironic that I'm in the same situation although mine shows far more wear than yours. I wonder how many other GS G owners are examining the drive splines on their bikes during the off season (for many of us). As to your request for an opinion re: whether or not to replace it. If it were riding season and I wanted to ride NOW, I'd lube it and use it. However, considering that it took me less than a week to order and get an OEM replacement via mailorder and decent riding weather doesn't happen every week around here, I'd follow my lead and get yerself a replacement. Just my .02 worth.
I've decided to remove the pumpkin while I'm at it and clean and lube the drive shaft splines. It'll be worth the peace of mind knowing that everything is in good shape and well lubed with Honda moly grease. I ordered a tube of that too while I was at it.

After cleaning it up for my off-season checkup and for the pics, I decided to give it a good coating of Moly-60 and put it back together. I figure it will be good for at least another 5-8k when it might be time for a new rear tire. In the meanwhile, I'll keep my eye out for a replacement. Any available on the forum?
EDIT:
BTW, do you think this '81 850G gem might have the "good" spline to fit the '83 1100G?

GS850G '80-'83 #64680-45112 (gold softer ring)
GS1000G '80 has #64680-45111 (dont know its hardness or colour)
GS1000G '81 has #64680-45112 (gold)
GS1100G '82-'83 #64680-45112 (gold)

bwinger had a post on this topic last summer or so, stating that even the newest Suzukis use the same hub and spline assemblies, and they are the newer silver ones. Therefore, a hub off an Intruder, Volusia, Boulevard, whatever, also has a chance of being correct.

Personally, I wouldn't ride that very far at all, and definitely not very far from home.
This kind of wear is not a linear process -- it's already worn through whatever small amount of surface hardening there was, and the spline teeth are able to slam back and forth quite a bit more. They will start to chunk and break out very soon.
The updated part number is:
64680-45113
If you punch that in to the "Quick Part Lookup" on the right at Babbitts, you'll get a list of all the compatible models:
You can also punch in 64680-45110 through 64680-45112 to see that all of these have been superceded by 64680-45113.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

before you button that thing up again, here's some food for thought:
If it wasn't worn the last time you changed the rear tire, it has worn that much since then.
Now, it will wear faster now that it is all rough and through the hard part, so iffn it was me I would fix it now while it's already half way apart and you won't be riding as much.
