I've used the airplane analogy for years. I torque bolts with a torque wrench, inspect the bike weekly for issues, and when I had brake problems I parked it until I could properly fix it. You can't always pull over and call when there is a problem and motorcycle tows are VERY expensive. You take your life in your own hands when you ride.
I have two drive wheels for mine and both have 1981 drive splines on them. One has over 30K and the teeth are perfect.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

No, Lurch. The 850 in the picture is not an 81. That's an 82 or 83. I can tell because of the wheels, the pinstripe design on the fuel tank, and the side cover. If you get the spline set off that, you'll be wasting your time and money.

I may check for other usable spare parts for my 1100G if an 82-83 850G bike is interchangeable?

Lurch, the number of interchangeable parts between a 1982 GS1100GZ and a 1982 GS850GZ is overwhelming.
Not interchangeable is the stator, and, of course, internal engine parts such as pistons and rings. Most body parts are totally interchangeable.

There are lots of good parts that will interchange to your 1100G (everything except the engine, pretty much), but the spline unit is one of the "soft" ones, unless someone changed it long ago.
Not all 1981 models came with the older harder splines. I have a "soft" spline unit sitting on my shelf that came from a 1981 850GL with low miles. It COULD have an earlier spline, depends on the build date. I parted an 82 850G that was build in feb 82 and it had an older spline. The date code is on the head tube. Of course, the spline could have been replaced at some point with an older one.
I'd get this for 50 dollars and see what it has. The bike has at least that much in other stuff on it. Depends how close you are to it.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

The owner said that it is off a 79 850 and is dark in colour and looks to be in excellent shape.

I had found that listing a few days ago along with a '80 front/rear tire set in NY too. The guy in NY never responded to my questions. In the mean time I purchased a '79 850G black colored one from BWringer and should be getting it this week.
I may still try to get the set in NY as I am travelling right through where it's located on my road trip to Cleveland in a week. Shipping would probably cost more than the parts!

Okay, I knew I checked my splines and they were fine when I looked at them from the top...Right
But what happens when I take the splines out and clean some of the grease off
Bike is a 1982 GS 850G with just under 22K. I found a wheel from an L model (16"). I'm not sure what year it was from but it fit fine and the splines were perfect. Thanks for the tip. I bet I wasn't far from being stranded.

update
After installing the new spline, I got a chance to road test it today. Everything seems fine, maybe notice a little less lash in shifts too. Interesting though, is that now I can shift into neutral much easier when parking and at stops. NO, I don't normally put it into neutral at lights or when on the road. But the G was always trickier to find neutral than the E.
