Painting side covers and such

Does anyone have recommendations for a company who will accept small painting projects? Specfically I'm looking to restore a side cover. The rest of the paint on the bike is in great shape and I want the replacement cover color matched. I could ship the other side cover for them to match it to.

I guess I could try a local shop but my initial inquiries have resulted in them saying we are to busy or we don't do small projects.

You could try to locate an automotive paint supply company that will colour match the paint and do up a spray bomb for you. You could then do it yourself fairly easily I would think. Take in the good cover for them to read for the colour formula. You would likely need a bomb of clearcoat as well to top coat. Don't know anything about costs or availability in your area but this is becoming more widely available I believe. Check around.

If bombs are not available they can still likely match the paint and give you a pint or so. With about $100 to $150 you can get a decent HVLP gun and small compressor that will get the job done and will be reuseable for future projects. With paint (usually 2 part urethane)and thinners for cleanup the cost will go up but will still be cheaper than a pro painter and you'll have lots leftover for touch ups and it will give you a starting point & gear for other painting projects.

Painting is not hard just time consuming but also rewarding when you get the job done yourself. If you want more info on how to and such just pm me & or do a search. I believe we've touched on this before.

PS If you do decide to do some painting please get a good & properly rated paint mask and don't relie on those paper masks. Paint spray can get past those and do nasty things to your lungs.

you didn't say what year or color, but matching the early candy colors ( i have imperial maroon) is nearly impossible on a budget. the company that made them is out of business (according to my local ppg dealer) and the paint is a tricolor that is hard to match perfectly.

I had some pearl white for my ’83 750ES mixed up and it cost about $100 for one pint of base coat and a pint of pearl coat (clear needs to be applied over the top). If you can find a shop that will mix you smaller quantities that would save some money, but then they may charge you a matching fee since they are getting less in return for their time spent formulating the color match.

Anyway you slice it, you are looking at quite a bit of money in order to do the job right. If the color is popular, you might be able to sell off your excess paint to someone here to offset the costs. I tried to do that earlier with the pearl white but couldn’t find anyone interested.

OK...so I tried to sneak in a KZ question on the GS site...SHAME

but I am sure it applies to all bikes?

The question refers specifically to my 79 KZ1000 MKII. Luminous Navy Blue is the color although I can't find the paint code? I did find that reproduction decals does have the correct stripes for it so its not as bad as I thought. Haven't found anything on "spray bomb" options yet but I am still looking.

Someone could bail me out and find me a left side cover in the correct color right...as I have found out a rare bike and the rarest color for this year and model..about 2000 made and very few exist in the U.S. most exported to Japan.
