    Is this a problem?

    I think it probably is.

True confessions: I dropped it on its left side at low speed while entering my driveway due to a slushyicy patch on the pavement.

A few hours after parking it, I noticed oil where I never saw oil before. I took a closer look:

    and then even closer...

Is that bad? Did my drop do that?

That crack could have been caused from the fall and it will definately leak oil. I would pull it off, replace the gasket and have it welded or replace it. You could JB weld it if you are really on a tight budget. Not sure how long that would last though.

      To answer your question....yes.

Looks like your crash guard impacted the bolt and cracked the stator cover. Although the oil just sloshes around in there, it will leak because it on the bottom and it should be easy to replace. I would think a stator cover for a 550 should be easy to find.

To make a point from a earlier post.... I'm glad that beautiful little girl of yours wasn't riding along that day.

        Oops

        Hi Mr. kerrfunk,

I'm sorry to hear of your mishap. It happens. I've dropped mine a couple of times. So far there's been no blood, no foul.

Use the situation as a learning tool. And you should have little trouble finding a replacement stator cover for your bike. Good luck with the repairs.

        Thank you for your indulgence,

Those covers are usually cheap and plentiful at the wreckers. I'm sure you'll be able to find one, replacing it will be easiest.

Now that really sucks. The crash bars designed to protect the case actually caused the problem. Major bummer. However, as the others say likely an easy fix with a replacement from the wreckers or e-bay.

I've been thinking about guards for mine as i have been having premonitions about dropping it. It might just happen as I dropped 2 of the last 3 bikes...and that was before the left leg got goofy. Problem is I can't find any.

I've been noodling around the idea of fabing my own and I think I know how to do it so that might be an upcoming project.

Sorry to hear about this but glad you didn't come to any harm.

            Cheers,

On my '82 750, that cover has the return oil passage, but also acts as a plug for the main oil gallery. Not so bad if you are low pressure, but not good if you have high pressure for plain bearings. my 2 cents.

assuming a 79 has the same part it surely looks the same

                30 bucks perhaps in total

and do replace it a slow annoying leak is a slovenly thing to accept oil alway flicking onto your boot or leg etc.

There's no damage to the main crankcase? I'd splash some degreaser on there and shine that baby up just to make sure that there's not another surprise lurking beneath.

if you got a reputable shop that welds, you could see if they could tig that crack, if they are any good, they shouldn't have any problem.

GS1000 and GS1100 covers might be the same, the 8 valve versions. Check the parts fische to be sure

Amazing how quickly it happened, even though I was going pretty slow. There was no fall. I was up, and then I was down. There was no inbetween.

Rest assured, it will be a long while before I leave the parking lot with my daughter.
