    Air Cleaner

    Hey Guys;

I know you all talk about pod filters and how you need to re-jet the carbs. My question is this:

I have 2 K&N filters that mount directly onto the carbs.

Do I have to re-jet the carbs to use these filters?

I have a stock 4-into-2 exhaust, and where the case vent tube attaches to the air box is broken off.

I would like to use the K&N's but I don't want my bike to run too lean.

This is what the actual filter looks like from K&N;s site:

    Thanks for your information.

Filters like that will cause the engine to run lean if you don't rejet - very similar to individual pods.

      Should I go from a 97.5 to a 110? Of should I go higher?

I'm not a jetting guy but I don't think it's as easy as just upping the mains. I think some needle shimming is in order, and you might have to change the pilot jets as well. There's reasons Dynojet kits come with all those parts.

It's most important to enrichen the PILOT jets since the bike runs on those from idle to about 1/3 throttle. Raise the needles a bit, too.
the mains might need enrichening, the only way to tell is by doing a throttle chop and reading the plugs.

Both my Guzzis had to have the pilots go from 48s to 50s and the mains from 138s to 142s, all with stock intake and exhaust.

One must remember most bikes come from the factory EPA lean.
My GS has holes in the mufflers and are blue from head to tail...sign of being lean.

People are talking about shimming the needle. How do you shim the needle?
I had my carbs completly apart, dipped and cleaned and I can't figure out how (or where) to shim the needle.

Zook, My GS has no holes in the muffler and the pipes haven't turned blue anywhere.

The PO put a K&N replacement filter into the air box. Maybe thats why it sat so long.

When you had the carbs apart, did you take the needles out of the slides?

If you did, you should have noticed that there is a thin metal washer under the circlip and a thicker nylon spacer over the circlip. There is a spring under the thin metal one that pushes the needle up to the large nylon piece that sits in the middle of the slide. In earlier bikes, there were several grooves in the needle into which you could place the circlip, to raise or lower the needle. "Shimming the needle" accomplishes this by removing the thick nylon spacer and replacing it with thinner metal washers that have a total thickness that is less than the nylon spacer. Since the spring is always pushing the needle UP, thinner washers on top will allow the needle to rise to a new level, enrichening the mixture.

Hey Steve, Did you get my E-Mail?
It is for the Spreadsheet so I can check my valve clearance.
