    RR Upgrade Advice

    Hello all,

I am installing a Duaneage RR and I am a bit confused. The bike is a '79 GS1000S. When I disconnected the old R&R and looked at the wires, I have 2 yellow, 2 white with blue stripes and one green with white stripe wires coming from the alternator. I was expecting 3 yellows, but when I looked at the wiring diagram in the manual, it shows this configuration being correct.

I've read past posts and having a wiring diagram from Duaneage, but I wasn't prepared to only have 2 yellows. Any thoughts?

    I'd appreciate your learned insights!

    Thanks.

Did your bike originally have separate rectifier and regulator? I have not examined the wiring on them, but later bikes had one of the wires from the stator directed toward a set of contacts in the headlight switch to disable the third leg of the stator when the headlight was off.

Your correct wiring for now will be to connect all three legs of the stator directly to all three inputs of your 'new' r/r, connect the other wires on the r/r to battery positive and negative, and the last one to a switched wire, usually the tail light wire. Be sure that wire has a good connection. If it is not connected, the r/r will boost output until it sees appropriate voltage on that wire. If it's not connected, it will never see voltage, and other nasty things might happen.

      It looks like it did.

Right again (as usual) This was a G/W wire going up to the switch from the stator and a W/R wire coming back to the rectifier.

Yes, if you trace the wires back toward the Stator you should find your 2 yellow wires tied together and your 2 blue/white wires tied together. The 3rd wire from the stator is your G/W wire. Connect these 3 to Duanes 3 yellow wires.

      That should work...

        Thanks guys,

As I look again at the wiring diagram, this is exactly the case. I had a separate regulator and rectifier. I think that I'm ready to give it another go.

        I appreciate the advice.

I think we might have yet another one convinced that we have BEEN THERE, DONE THAT.

Please let us know how it turns out.

And getting rid of the two piece charging system is the best thing you can do for it. Ya gotta love how the Honda RR bolts in the same holes.

I have to admit that I was pleased that I didn't have to drill and tap any holes. The mounting was clean and easy. Thanks!!
