I think I found several problems with my bike that was causing the problems. I removed the carbs and looked everything over. I did not clean the head suface where the intakes bolts up. It had silicone or something similar smeared all over. I scraped them off and bolted the intakes down tight. One of the choke plungers was loose. The next thing was after replacing gas line with clear line I noticed air bubbling back ward in the line.It was still getting really high idle after starting it. I plugged the vaccum line and put the petcock on prime and it seemed to work alot better. The rpm's didn't go very high but it did seem to idle down really slow. I was able to adjust the idle with the main idle screw. I think I lost the spring if it had one the choke works okay now. I am thinking maybe the valves need checked and the carbs synced. I was able to ride it up the alley but it was way to soggy to do any more. It seemed to not have the power, almost like the throttle or the choke was closed? would this be the valves need adjusted or the carbs needing synced. the idle seemed to be up and down but only about 500 rpm's. I am hoping not to have to take the carbs back off, but I am getting better at it. I need a new battery but am going to wait for a little warmer weather. If I take the valve spacers off of a 700e would they be the same for all engines? Thanks for all the help so far. It seems to be coming along.Tags: None

Did you replace the intake boot O-rings? If not, that is most likely the source of your hanging idle.Ed

Sorry I guess it is easy to forget.Yes 82 650 L , I don't think I got a mega weclome. I remember reading someone elses. I have been to your site alot. I printed the carb rebuild, and is out in the garage. I replaced the o-rings boots and new o-rings in the carbs. I still need to sync the carbs and check the valves. I got the drain o-rings Thank You very much sir they work great. I was wondering if the back pressure in the gas line was normal? It doesn't do it in prime. It only did it once in awhile when trying to start. The gas level in the line wasn't full, when the petcock was turned to prime it filled up quick. I don't know what is normal. I can get the valve spacers out of a 700E if they can be used in my bike? I will probly try to join the valve spacer club.

The 16-valve 700E uses locknut adjustments for the valves and NOT valve shims like the 8-valve motors do. These bikes have a vacuum operated petcock. In the "Prime" position the fuel is allowed to flow via gravity, without vacuum from the engine opening the petcock valve. Keep us informed.

You has silcone where? On the rubbers from the carbs to the engine or airbox? That would have been to seal them from air by a PO. New intake boots and O rings would be a good start there.
Loose choke plunger, tighten it up. Don't crack the carb though.
As for a missing spring,a spring where? That will have an impact on something. Can you be more specific?
Valve's checking is a good one to do, carbs synic is probably one of the last jobs after you've got all the other bits sorted first.
The the lower and erractic idle that could well be the intake boots, lode choke, missing spring or a major carb problem. Your tickover should be about 1100/1200rpm so its a good sign that the bike runs at 500rpm.
As for these valve spacer from a 700E. Can you explain what your saying as spacers? If you mean shims then probably if they are the right size shim for what you engine needs. If you mean something else them it would be best to put a photo up and we can ID what your talking about for certain.

I am sorry about leaving even more stuff out. You have to agree that I am very good at it. I replaced the intake boots and forgot to clean up the head mating surface. When I had the high idle I took it back apart to check what I missed or did wrong. I relized that the mating surface still had the silicon or whatever it was so I scraped the old silicon off and reinstalled the boots ( that are new) and o-rings too. I think there may have been a spring on the main adjustment screw for the idle. To hold some pressure on it perhaps to keep it from vibrating loose or something? Sorry for alot of question all at once but it is hard to sort out. I figured the petcock valve may be bad if it is not getting as much fuel in the on position as it is in the prime position. I can get it to idle at 1000 to 1200 but you can hear it is not running quite right. I really want to ride my bike alot this year. I feel like I am burning daylight sometimes. Still need to install 2 tires. It is getting warmer Thanks for all the help and thank you for my mega welcome, Mr. Basscliff. I found the problem, it was the float height. It is running really nice. I will have to replace the petcock valve, it is really sucking gas. I plugged the vaccum line with a screw and ran it on prime. WOW!!! It was so smooth and seemed to have really good power. I could only make a short run, didn't get up to highway speed. It is idleing nice. I am moving on to the tires and then the electrical system. Thanks for the help so far. This is one great site and the people here are the ones making it happen. Thanks again
