CV carb set up after rebuild

    Gents,

I'm about to strip down, clean and rebuild the CV carbs on my '82 GS1100GL and have been reading up the guide and other information I can find either here or places like BikeCliffe's site.

All seems to make sense except when I did the VM's from my '79 850 there were post reassembly notes on how to set the pilot air and fuel screws to get the mixture close enough for the engine to fire up. Then there was further advice on how to adjust those screws on a per carb basis to get the mixture as close as possible to correct.

I don't see anything like that with the CV rebuild notes so assuming I need to do a similar thing this time, how do I go about it - what am I missing?

Can someone coax an imbecile to a higher understanding. Thanks as always.
It's smoke that make electronic components work.
Every time I've let the smoke out by mistake, they never work again.

    Hi Mr. Wallowgreen,

There is a carb oem spec sticky thread at the top of the Tech Section. Search the thread for GS850 and you'll find this:

GS850 (80) the specs are for the CV's

    idle.................... 1050 +/- 100 r/min
    carb................... mik BS32SS
    id no................... 45120
    bore size ............ 32 (1.26)
    float height ......... 22.4 +/- 1.0 (0.88 +/- 0.04)
    fuel level ............ 5.0 +/- 0.5 (0.20" +/-0.02")
    VALVE SEAT........ 2.0
    STARTER JET....... 32.5
    PILOT SCREW ..... 3.5
    PILOT AIR JET ..... #200
    pilot jet............... #42.5
    jet needle........... 5D57-3 (the -3 3rd notch)
    needle jet .......... X - 6
    pilot outlet........... 0.7
    BY PASS............. 1.0, 0.8, 0.8
    MAIN AIR JET...... 1.7
    main jet............. #115

Also check out these two links on my website:

    Carb Sync Notes

The specs in the carb oem thread say 3.5 turns out, but many here recommend starting with 2 or 2.5 turns out from lightly seated.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

That's good information, Cliff, except he's working on a 1000GL this time.

Wallowgreen, if your bike is stock, as far as airbox and exhaust are concerned, be sure to set the float levels properly (lots of recent threads on that subject), then set the idle mixture screws between two and three full turns out from lightly seated. Your VM carbs on the 850 had separate screws for fuel and air. The BS carbs you have on your 1000 use a fixed air jet in the carb intake and a fixed fuel jet in the float bowl, so the mixture is always the same. The only thing you can adjust is how much of that mixture gets in, and you do that with the idle mixture adjust screw that is over the carb outlet.

I followed the guide for CV's on my 81' GS1000 E and had no problems. It looks a lot harder in the picture than it does when you've got them in your hands to work on.
