hi guys ... hi guys a few years ago i had pin hole in my 1980 gs1000e tank along the side stand side seam and around the seat section anyway it went back to metal and then i used loctite cold weld 2 part mixture...it worked o.k. for a short time and then more stuffing around and finally i got another better tank and had it plated by a sheet metal worker who migged the tank,, no leakes,, then finally i was lucky on ebay to win a red/white 1000s tank in superb condition and i also keep the fuel full in the tank not 1/4 or 1/2 but always full of 98% unleaded and no more problems and my baby runs like a dream i cann,t stop grinning,,,, hope this helps you regards david

Or til the MEK is clear of rust color) Braze the preformed piece in, let cool and tank seal. If you dont know how to braze any radiator shop can do this for you.
I would take exception to the use of MEK, however, as it is dangerous stuff to be breathing at any time, and in a closed environment it can do you serious harm..
The most common chemical is probably a solution of phosphoric acid, which tends to dissolve rust and leave a black coating behind. POR, I believe, uses this. A weaker solution is found in CLR, and a gelled version in Naval Jelly.
Wear rubber gloves with any of these, and preferably an apron as well.
