    tac. port cap

Hi im new to the gs resources. I have a small question ? Does anyone know what the thread style is on the engine side of a 18 GS850G tac. cable. I have recently removed my tac. and am wanting to plug the tac port on the engine.

    Thanks

You can leave the fitting in place without a cable. Maybe put a vinyl bolt or vacuum cap over it to make it a little neater.

Are you trying to plug the unthreaded hole in the cylinder head, or put a threaded plug into the tach cable fitting?

M12? Who knows, get thee a pitch gauge. Or just a collection of fasteners I guess. Or take the tach cable bit to the fastener store and match it up.

          The engine is not threaded.

This tach cable fitting goes into the engine and is sealed with an o-ring type sealing band:

I don't know what the thread is in here, but I suspect it's M12 X 1.5, as suggested above:

          Just remove it, like so:

And take it to a hardware store with you. A real hardware store, not one of those useless big box joints. Try various metric bolts until you find the correct thread. Make sure you note the diameter and thread pitch.

You might find a short bolt that will work, or you might even find a setscrew with the correct thread at the hardware store. If not, you can order what you need from McMaster-Carr:

If we guessed right on the thread (M12 X 1.5), this should do the trick:
McMaster-Carr is the complete source for your plant with over 595,000 products. 98% of products ordered ship from stock and deliver same or next day.

If not, search for "metric set screw" and go from there to find the thread you need. McMaster ships same day, and their shipping is always very cheap and fast.

To eliminate the tack cable, Find a suitable sized core plug/ freeze plug to fit the hole. I think they used one on the later bike with elect tack but not offered as a part???

Right -- it would probably be cleaner all around to find a way to plug the unthreaded hole in the engine and eliminate the fitting altogether.

                  11, 12, 13, 14 .. parts from a 1982 GS300L

                  Appear to still be available.

Not sure but I imagine it would work. ..

How could it be fastened though .. does the 850 plug fasten the same way ??

                    Good spot, Mike.

The 850 tach cable fitting is retained the exact same way (with a little plate -- #13 in the diagram -- and screw), so it should work fine with that plug. Suzuki cable fittings are usually pretty much all the same, so I bet the plug is the correct size.

For the record, I just went out and measured on an 850, and:

                    Unthreaded hole in cylinder head:
                    14mm diameter.

Thread inside tach cable fitting -- 18mm diameter X 1.5mm pitch (very nonstandard, so a plug or bolt isn't available from McMaster)

Preparing for the possible loss of my tach, I checked the 1983 GS1100E fiche on FLATOUT and found the same plug .. same part number.

                      Good chance they are universal.
