    Dyna S Ignition v. Stock

    I've got an 83 850 GL with the newer type ignition / spark advancer / rotor. The bike was laid down and the ignition cover and rotor are damaged. Replacement ignition parts are tough to find and OEM are obviously pretty expensive.

    I understand the benefits of the Dyna replacement for pre 82 bikes with older points that need to be tuned.

    Question: If paying good money anyway, would a Dyna S provide a marked improvement for the charging system and spark of my 83? Or should I just keep trolling ebay for an old part that might work....or not?

    Anyone have much experience with using Dyna S on 82 / 83 / 84?

    My understanding is that you need a mechanical advance unit from a '79 - '81 850 in order to install the Dyna S in your bike. This will not affect the charging system at all and I don't think the Dyna S is an improvement over your stock ignition, particularly the type you have that has the ignition advance curve built into the ignitor. It's less of a gamble though and relatively cheap.

    BTW, Suzuki stopped using points in '79.

            Agree. But if the stock system is working correctly, I wouldn't change it.

              The only advantage is the cost, unless you find used parts. If you go the dyna ign I believe you will also need to make a spacer for the 83 model ign cover

                  Dyna for later

                  Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like the Dyna might be overkill right now unless I can't find a used replacement part somewhere else.

                  The Dyna S is still cheaper than OEM / Bike Bandit.

                  I'll just keep checking ebay, gs forum, and the salvage yards.

                    If you decide to go with the Dyna, just post in parts wanted for a mechanical advancer. I and probably several others have an extra. The same advancer was used on lots of different GS models.

                    Sorry, I don't have any extra '82-'83 ignition parts. But they are transplantable -- my '83 GS850 is wearing an '81 engine with the '83 ignition parts.

                      The Dyna S cuts out the need for an igniter. I love mine. The enine starts with a slight touch of a button and runs great.
                      I chased my tail trying to jet my carbs with the stock ignition. The coils are weak and the igniters burn up (because of old age).

                            There is a post in here on how to repair your 850 igniter.

                            Sorry, it's a post by matchless and it's for the GS1000 but you can make it and it should work on the 850.

                              If you're still looking for a stock system but don't wanna shell out for the Dyna S, I have a stock system from an 80 to 82 I think. You'll still need an advancer from someone. It still works just fine. Shoot me a PM. Let me know what it'd be worth to you. I'm not looking to get rich, and I'm too lazy to sell on ebay.
