    shift shaft removal 82 1100gl

the manual shows the shift shaft just pulling out, with the clutch removed, etc...but when i try to pull it out it comes to a point and hangs. any ideas?

When you try to pull it though did you watch the shaft from the left side to see if it makes it past the seal?

well the seal is completely gone. thats why im so confused. i just wanted to take the shaft out and clean the shaft housing out since it hopefully wont be opened for another 26 years. i just hit the shifter side of the shaft with a rubber hammer and a dowel for about 5 minutes. it comes to a point and moves no more.

So you've removed the clutch, clutch hub, and all the stuff in the way on the right side of the engine already?

If the shaft is bent or has a burr somewhere, that can prevent it from coming out -- the clearances where it rotates are fairly tight.

Assuming the clutch bits are out of the way, I'm thinking it might be bent.

hmm....interesting idea. no evidence on bike of a wreck. shaft looks straight enough. ill have a closer look at that tonite. im wondering if it might be a burr. it felt kind of rough when i was removing the seal.

Be very careful trying to hammer on it, You could end up needing new engine cases when it breaks COuld be bent as mentioned SOme of them have a C clip on the shifter dhaft ? You did remove it ??

1100GL should not have a clip by the seal.

it is a simple removal out the clutch side. if there is resistance you need to inspect the work you are doing.

removing the lower oil pan will shed light on the shaft as it goes through the cases.

well new oil pan is in the mail! haha. guess off comes the pan. if my cam chain tensioner is not leaking do you guys think it would be worth my time to go ahead and rebuild it now while the rest of the bike is in pieces as well?

Sure -- it takes about 5 minutes to do and the parts are less than $5.

Worst case if the shaft is bent and will need replacement. Get the dremel out and stuff the clutch area with rags and cut the shaft off and push it out the shifter side

It doesn't say anything about removing the bushing on the shaft?

I have my Pop's side cover off for polishing and noticed a little bushing on the shaft. I wonder if you heat it up with a propane torch if it would slide off (the bushing that is).
