    engine timming

well, I have everything together, now I have spark occasionally. I set the #4 piston at the top ( the side my points are on), intake valve just closed, and the exhaust is closed, timming marks lined up on govener with the mark just at the T like the manual said to, and the marks on my cam chain gears are set right, #1 to the front at the edge of gasket #2 pointed straight up, and #3 pointed strait up, 20 teeth apart. what should my points be doing on the 1-4 set and the 2-3 set??
currently 1-4 are open like there at the top of the lobe. and 2-3 are closed. did I put this together 180 out???

I'm pretty sure #1 is supposed to be at TDC when the cams are timed.

gday mate.#1 and #4 will be at TDC.Both will fire at the same time even though one[not#1] will be on exhaust stroke. And at TDC for 1 and 4 the points will have just closed.

The crank trigger will be pointing to the left with the T mark lined up and #1 all the way up. Always time the cams in with TDC on #1.

further to my last. The points may not be closed but they will have fired.Chef is,I assume, talking about a CDI [transistor]ignition.Which would be pointing to the left but will have past the actual "trigger point"[If 1 and 4 are at TDC]I havent actually run a points ignition since my last BSA so im not sure if your points ARE closed at TDC.But they will have just fired.[Or should have]Have a good day.
