    Still runnin rich

    Hello all,

I have been restoring my 1980 GS 750ET with 12,000 original miles for the past 3 months. You all have been a great help. Thanks again!

    I have finished but am still running rich. You can smell the fumes, they burn the eyes.Here's what i have done so far;

-Fuel tank relined, POR 15 (the ONLY way to go!)
-New 3 ohm coils w/7mm wires, new plugs
-Coil mod (well worth to do)
-checked and adjusted valves, #3 exhaust had almost no gap, adjusted, installed new gaskets
-replaced all bad, worn, damaged wiring throughout the bike, installed new fuses and and holders with shrink /crimp connectors.15amp main,15 amp coil relay,10 amps for all other circuits
-removed and cleaned carbs, new gaskets, boots are new and replaced worn clamps
-new vacuum petcock from Z1, OEM replacement( DON'T waste your time like i did trying to modify anything other that OEM
-refueled tank after cleaning out with fresh 87 octane fuel

Before all this, my bike fouled plugs bad due to weak spark, always smelled a gas exhaust.Idle was weak and either ran under 900rpm's or quit running.

Now the bike starts right up, runs down the road well. No problems other than the bad fumes.

Road it 65 miles, pulled plugs and ALL are black. No as bad as before but will get there eventually.

The BS 34 mm (CV) carb, how do you adjust the air/fuel mixture. I read in my clymers manual how to do the older 26 mm.

The air screw on top of the engine side of my carbs, is this where i can do an adjustment? How much? 2 1/2 to 3 turns from being bottomed out?

Please help so i can finally finish (for now) thanks.

If you haven't done it yet you should vacuum sync the carbs. Do you have access to a colortune? This will help you fine tune your mixture adjustment. The mixture screws on my 750 are set 2 turns out from lightly seated.

Does your bike have pods and/or pipe installed? When you cleaned the carbs did you make a note of the jet sizes inside the carb?

have you checked your needle and seats. they may be letting too much fuel into the carbs, if they do not seat they keep on flowing fuel.
somthing else you might look at is the float adgustment if they are set too high they can cause the same problem .
      have fun ......toolman

needle and seats are good, set floats to 22mm.

Don't have a colortune, don't even know what it is. What are pods or pipes? jets are 2.5 all but 1 have been replaced.
