Excellent pictures there, but I don't remember any mention that it's the last part of the DOT number.

the DOT number gives you the day week and year it was made.

Actually, it's only the number of the week and the year.
For example: 4807 would be the 48th week of 2007. If you only see three digits, they were made before 2000, and they only use the last digit of the year, so 487 could be the 48th week of 1997, 1987, 1977, ...

In other words, if you only see three digits, CHANGE THEM NOW.
