    Handlebar Options

    I am new to riding motorcycles and I have only riden mine about 20 miles at one time.

    The handlebars that came with my bike have a pretty hi rise. I think the rise is at least 6.5". I am 6 foot and right now I'm sitting completely up straight.

    I was told that I should get something more low profile.

    I have a 79 GS 850 and plan on riding at least 200 miles most trips- I live in the boonies.


    Any suggestions.

    I have a 1980 GS850GT and I like my stock bars. But others prefer Superbike bars or Daytona bars. They give you a more aggressive "lean forward" riding position.

          The Daytona bars worked for me. The superbike bars may be 1" narrower across. 29.5" vs 28.5"? The stock bars were 30.5" across but I like the lower position and some of my weight on the bars for the twisties. I replaced the stock buckhorns that made me sit too straight up on my '83 1100G. Much better at higher speeds and puts some of the weight on my arms and shoulders and not just on my back, but not too forward leaning. You will have to re-position your throttle and choke cables because the bar is 4" inches lower. Mirrors may or may not be an issue either. At $20 for the bars you can't go wrong.

            On an 850G, Daytona bend bars are almost mandatory.
            1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

              Hi Mr. bwringer,

              I'm going to hijack this thread a little bit.

              Hey Brian, did you have to buy shorter cables when you installed the Daytona bar on your bike? How much shorter? Can I see a picture please? The only picture I have of your bike is this one, and you can't see much.
