hub spline blues

just tore the rear wheel off my 82gs1100gk to check the splines and i was disgusted with what i found.lets just say there is more off the teeth missing then what is there.. other than paying 121 plus shipping from bike bandit is there any one who can help me out or tell me what years will work so i can search fleabay..if i cant find one at a decent price the bike will be sitting in the shop for the riding season because of lack of funds being my wife was layed off and were on just my piddly income now lol thanks to david patterson our great ny gov. lol please any help would be appreciated. All of the shaft GS shaft drives use the same adapter You can even use the later ones From a VX800 ????

You guys are killing me!....I had my spare spline listed cheap for weeks on the forum "For Sale - Parts" and no takers....and now 3 of you are suddenly in need. Sorry, but I let mine go for less than half price of a new one to help a fellow forum user yesterday! I guess timing is everything.

I can't vouch for the site, just passing on info from another user, but the VL800 C50 part # matches what's listed for the older GS1100G, but cheaper $.

Pat, on my last GS, an 1100GK, I ran a spline set from 1979 GS850G. They're all interchangeable.

Go to eBay and see if you can find a rear wheel for an early GS850G or GS1000G. Chances are the wheel has the spline set already in the hub. Buy the entire wheel and use it as a spare, and you'll have the old-style spline set that lasts forever.

Hi,

According to Babbit's online parts reference, even the early '80s GS650G and GL use the same spline gear. Original part number is 64680-45112. The updated part number is 64680-45113.

Also the GV1200GLG/GLF/etc, the VL800, VS800, and VZ800 use this part.

Just put a part number into the "Quick Parts Lookup", choose the brand, hit the 'Quick Look Up' button, and it tells you all the bikes that use the part.

I understand the "newer" gold colored splines are made from a material that doesn't wear as well as the "earlier" black ones. What year did they switch over?

For certain, the black spline set came stock on the 1979 GS850G, the first shaft-driven Suzuki. Same unit came on the 1980 GS850G and GS1000G.

Brian Wringer says that some 1981 GS850G's and GS1000G's came with the gold-colored splines. Not sure what the breaking point is on the bikes' serial numbers.

For certain, the 1982 GS850G had the bad splines. I know from personal experience, as my first GS bike was an 82 850G.

As I understand it, the lighter color metal from around '82-'83 was inferior. The newer parts are harder, even though they are the same color.

The GV1200 one should.
Note: I've heard of GV1200s with GS final drives. The whole GV1200 final drive will not fit on a GS because it doesn't have shock mounts.
