    Oil Leak Help...fun, fun!

    Okay...82 GS650gt

    It's running fairly well now - idleing good for the most part. Occasionally idleing low and stalling out, but not very often.

    Now on to figuring a possible cause on the oil leak. It's showing up mostly on the left front on the lower half of the fins (sorry I don't know very many technical words), but also a slight amount on the right side too. The harder I run it (higher speeds, higher rpms) the more it leaks. It wasn't leaking too much at all around town, but after taking it on the expressway for about 8 miles my whole left boot was soaked as well as most of the parts on that side.

    Any guesses on where to start the search? Any common places where these leak? It's hard to say how much oil is lost, but I was still very close to being full. Also, it is smoking some too - so I'm guessing there is an internal leak somewhere?

    Is it leaking from the base gasket?
    1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
    1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

      Showing my "noob-ness" (if that's a word), but I'm not sure what that is. It's only showing up on the bottom half of the fins.

        I just read the other "advice" post about his oil leak. I will check the tach cable and see about that as well as clean it, talc it and get back to you guys. Sorry for a somewhat duplicate thread.

        It is on the cooling fins, but I can't tell if its running there or not. If it's the tach cable, will it leak more at higher, prolonged speeds?

          Hi,

          Just about any leak will be more pronounced when riding at high speeds because the pressures in the motor are higher. When my tach cable was leaking it would drip down on the headers and smoke. It was a little scary until I figured out what it was.

            Thanks for the help. My bike smokes, but only from the exhausts...I don't know if that would be related to the leak if it is from the tach cable or not.

            Hopefully I will have time to look at it in the next couple days.

              The cylinder studs might be leaking from what I've seen as an o-ring in between the cylinders and the block. Also the cylinders do have air passages that pass to the rear of the motor so leaks from the cam chain tensioner can rear its ugly head in the front of the motor.

                probably not what tour leak is but on my bike i had the o-ring on starter leaked.somehow it got around to front of engine .took some doing to figure out where it was coming from.I even change stater gasket and o-rings on head stud nuts, before i tracked it down, may sound stange but oil traveled to front of motor somehow.
