Automotive Muffler clamps
I'm in the process of re-assembling the G after replacing the top end gaskets etc. The clamps that tie the inside pipes on each side are shot. I'm not convinced they were sealing anything any way . Has anyone ever used the old u-bolt type muffler clamps on GS pipes? Since they are under the bike, appearance is not an issue. I can see that it might be a problem down the road getting the pipes apart if the clamp creased them too much. I bought some inch & 5/8th's clamps but they are too small so, I measured the pipe with calipers and it appears I need 2" clamps. I tried hose clamps but they are obviously not up to the task. Been there, done that: buy new ones from Suzuki. You might also want to buy new sealing sleeves unless yours are still in great shape.
Auto clamps will just ensure that you will never ever be able to disassemble your exhaust again.
If you want to ride REAL BAD and the parts won't be in for a while, then use hose clamps and maybe a piece of thin aluminum from a pop can to keep the leaking down to a minimum. Watch your fingers.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

When I took the stock pipes off my 550 to get repair welded, I was able to re-use the old clamps underneath - I used some exhaust pipe sealant (tube of goop) from the auto parts store & it sealed them up very nicely, without deforming them like a car muffler clamp would. Didn't need to replace the fiber sleeves, just gooped them up. Worked great, no leaks.'85 GS550L - SOLD

Sealing sleeves ? Hmmmm. Could that be why they weren't sealing in the first place? Seems a PO may have left something out. There were no sleeves in this puppy. Of course, next time I remove exhaust I hope its to install the 4-1 Super Trapp I have up in the attic. I never "want" to ride. I "have no choice" but to ride.

I used a automotive stanless steal band clamp (really fancy exaust clamp) on my collector to center pipe. It works great and keeps it looking normal. They are around $10 a piece, but it works.

Clamps and spacers
I got some exhaust spacers and chrome plated muffler clamps from www.jcwhitney.com

Hey BBill,
Where did you find the spacers on JC Whitney? I have searched and can't find them. I've been looking at fishtail straight pipes (and a baffle from a friend) but they're all 1 3/4" and I believe the header pipes on old GS twins are 1 1/2", so I'm looking for spacers too.

Band Clamps
Band clamps work great. I have one on mine for the baffle.(if you can call a D&D a baffle). I could use a litttle muffler sealant in there, but otherwise works perfect and looks good too...
