On two occasions I have had a starter solenoid fail immediately after using jumper cables connected to a battery in a car to start it. Once with a '79 CBX, and again with a '80 GS1000G. I beleive that each time the vehicle was running at the time. I don't know of any engineering reason why that would cause a starter solenoid to fail, but after two separate occasions, it is difficult to believe that it is strictly a coincidence.
I got a used solenoid off a parts bike for the Suzuki for like 5 bucks.sigpic Too old, too many bikes, too many cars, too many things

Solenoid

Try supplying power directly to your starter (hot wire to the leed wire and ground to the starter body). See if it turns over. If it doesn't, you'll need to remove it and check the brushes to see if they're worn out....or it might just be a grubby armature, which you can easily clean up with some emery cloth.
Before you do that, you can also use a screwdriver and cross the two connections on the solenoid (with the ignition on). Does it turn over??
Also, how's the condition of your battery??
I strongly suspect the problem is with your starter....let us know what you find out!Last edited by chuckycheese; 03-21-2009, 05:08 PM.1980 GS1100E....Number 15!

I regularly charge my Motorcycle battery using a car charger, but I keep it set to the lowest 5 amp scale. Even at that it is probably charging the little moto battery too fast so I only do it for limited periods.
