    Not a Suzuki but hoping for expert advise

    Found a local 1980 Honda CB 750 that i would like to pick up as a second bike http://charleston.craigslist.org/mcy/1084303526.html

    Anyone here have any experience with them? I would like to go look it over but wondering if anyone knows about common issues with them. Gonna search for a forum for them in a bit but the advise here is good and i trust you guys. So bring on all the knowledge you guys can bring to bear please.

    other than the obvious of course like if it has a title, mileage, test ride possible. from the sound of the post it does run though maybe not well will have to see

      www.cb1100f.com has lots of information on the '79-'83 16 valve Honda CB engines. It isn't only for the 1100s either. There is just as much, if not more, discussion fo the 750 and 900 models.

        Charging systems are a common failure point and the number one reason they get mothballed. Easy check is to rev the bike up and see if the headlight brightens. If not, then the charging rotor is the most likely culprit.

        The DOHC 750/900/1100 motors will do big miles; rings and bores wear well. Scheduled valve adjustments are critical - they require shim adjustment and this is often overlooked until valves eventually burn. Heads cannot be removed in the frame on these bikes, so if the head needs to come off for valve work, then the motor needs to come out.

        Pods are not a good idea on these things - the CV's require the vacuum effect of the stock airbox. You can get them to run with pods, but the time and work required is a PITA and the bike will often run worse than with the stock airbox.

        Aside from that, check the things you normally would on a used bike.

        As already mentioned www.cb1100f.net is the place to go for advice and parts for these bikes. Seeing as the bike is a custom (and not an F) then www.cb750c.com is another place you could check out.

          I have a 550F and the bike hadnt run for 8 years and then I rebuilt and did all the usual and when I went for the first try for the start up she went with no problems. but I dont know who the C compares to the F.

              A quick test even without starting the engine, but battery needs to be charged, is to hold a thin feeler gauge about a 1/4" from the right hand cover over the alternator and switch the ignition on. The feeler guage gets pulled in by the rotor as it gets power and magnetises.
