1982 GS1000g transmission rebuild or not?

I have a chance to pick up a running gs1000g for free. The owner tells me the transmission needs rebuilding. Is this a practical job for someone with limited skills but wiling to learn to take on? Cost effective? I don't know the milage, but when I saw the bike a few years ago it looked pretty good.

It's a major repair. Engine will have to be removed from the frame and completely torn down to get at the transmission. I parted out a 1000G not long ago and still have the bottom end, almost complete. Let me know if you need parts.

if it is a 1982 it is not a 1000G, they punched it out to 1100 for 82.
you have to abuse one pretty bad to wear out the transmission, try to find out what exactly it is doing wrong or not doing.

Thanks guys for straighting me out on the year and motor. I know he said a GZ. Must have a disconnect between ears and memory! I guess I'll pick up this GS "1k somethin" when the snow stops flying and clutter my garage with some M/C parts. It'll be a nice change from the sawdust that was there before, and will sound better than my table saw. I'll get back to ya when it's home and have an idea of year and parts. Thanks
