Re-laqeur Polished parts

I have stripped off the laquer and polished most of the aluminum parts on my GS550L. What type of laquer could I put on to protect the parts that aren't subjected to a lot of heat? Is there a particular kind that won't yellow and is transparent?

I've yet to find a type that won't yellow or flake, though I've never tried clear powder coating. The best solution otherwise is just to keep on top of the polishing.

I will offer this

The Por 15 2 part epoxy Clear is a probably one of their best products. I used it on clear coat my frame, wheels and other brushed aluminum parts on the ED. I have polished aluminum wheels that will get the same treatment later this year on the Gixxer street fighter.

Proper AP120 prep is required !!!!! Don't use the normal prep material for opaque paints. The other metal etch (acid) will ruin/dull a polished finish.

This is designed to adhere to highly polished metals. The purpose is required to stop any corrosion u might trap underneath.

Th clear is compatible wit the Hardnose products so you can clear over thardnose which is how I did my ED wheels. They look like new and the finish is very durable and impervious to chemicals

One disclaimer is that I was warned off of clear coating polished aluminim, so I did a brushed look as it would be less noticeable if there was corrosion. In close to a year I see no degradation, but of course it was not highly polished.

On the other hand I would not try and clear coat anything with a rattle can clear. Those types of material are just not the same as a 2 part epoxy product.

I would only spray these product with a spray gun. Brushing would cover but really be messy. If U cant afford the spray setup stick with metal polish.

I didn't put a clear coat on my polished aluminum parts. I just use autosol polish once a month and it shines right up, Ted

I polished numerous parts on my 'S, 3 years ago and didn't put anything on them.They still look like they've just been done.All I do is when I wash the old girl,I wipe all the polished alloy with a bit of WD40 on a rag.Cheers,Simon.

There's a product that I used for protecting aluminum pontoon boats called Sharkhide Aluminum protectorant. Once applied (its about as thin as water and is wiped on and allowed to dry) the aluminum looked like new even after being in water for a season. Places that I missed were dulled out and tarnished. I hadn't thought about using it for polished aluminum parts but I bet it would work. Just a thought. Personally, though, I prefer Simon's idea.

I also polished my covers and did not clear coat after. Just clean them and polish with your favorite polish. I do mine once a year.

Don't know if it will work or not, but I was going to try ordinary paintwork wax polish.
I usually just use autosol polish about once a month.

Once its polished to a good shiny finish, its easy to keep on top of it.

Wipe it over with oil for winter storage.

When I restored my 78 GS750 two years ago I stripped all of the lacquer off the lacquered parts and just used Mothers Aluminum polish to brighten and maintian them and these parts look great!!
I didn't want to mess with lacquer.
