What little corner of the world do you call "home"?

Or, in other words, how far do I have to drive to come get them?

Edit: just did a reverse search on your phone number and saw that you are in the St. Cloud, MN area. Too far for me.

Comes a point beyone wich a guy's got to decide BY HIMSELF if he wants to go on or not. And that point is when fixing the bike's going to cost more than the value of the bike as a whole. Motorcycle mechaninics charge a fortune (at least here in Montreal) and sometimes it just makes more sense to let go and buy another bike (even if it isn't a GS) cause you know that the money you're going to have to pump in the old bike to make it work properly will be a waist any way you look at it. I once owned a 1979 Yamaha xs 1100 with only 20k miles on it. I bought it 1400$. Two years later the bike needed lots of fixing: change timing chain, complete carb rebuild, intermitent elctrical problems, carb boots were cracked, Brakes needed work, valves neaded ajustment and other stuff. All of this added up to about 2000$ The exhaust was stating to be quite rusted so there was another 400$ loss coming up there also... I had two choices, either spend 2400$ fixing a bike that I could resell 1400$ or sell the old bike 400$, add this money to the 2400$ that I would have spent to fix it and buy another bike fore 2800$ Guess what, I decided to fix up the old thing. It cost me a fortune but the bike was a joy to ride. A year an a half later I wanted a FJ1200 so I sold my fixed up Xs for a grand total of 1200$... So the moral of the story is: it is your decision and no one elses, what you do with your money

The GS line of bikes were built almost 30 years ago. As with any old vehicle, maintenance needs to be done. Paying a mechanic to perform this maintenance will put you in an up side down financial position very quickly at today's shop rates. Because of this, I don't recommend old vehicles to people that don't turn their own wrenches. For people that are handy though, the GS bikes will run reliably up to 100,000 miles or even more with proper care.

I had to do that with a Boat. It was a great fishing boat for a lake but I started to lose confidence in it on the river. Thats no place I wanted to be stranded with the wife or grandkids on board with a barge barreling down on us. The bike is getting to be the same way. I dont have the confidence in a near 30 year old Bike like I would in a new one. I dont have the resource for a new bike so the old one will have to do. Even tho I think its capable Im just not going to jump on it and go cross country.

I think Sean is totally justified in cutting his losses and frustration and dumping his bike for a newer model. Just keep in mind a newer bike is going to need maintenance just like the old one.

I think Dave8338 is closer than anyone to these bikes. There is another guy out there but I cant think of his name. Regardless, having someone go look at it probably wont do much for you.

YEP...within about 15miles! NOW, the trick will be to get it past the wife. If anyone is interested...I can go take a look at them and post more detailed info. I may have to plan a "road trip" to the Watkins, Eden Valley area. I could even do it over a lunch hour...

C'mon you tightfisted Yanks. If Sean could post them to me with note ' A birthday gift to my favourite English cousin' (to try and beat our customs and excise) I'd snap 'em up.

Even with our p*ss poor exchange rate with you guys at the moment that's still blo*dy cheap over here.
