led single turn single indicator light

I'm converting all the instrument lights to LED while installing Rudy's gauge faceplates.

Everything was easy until I checked out the turn signal indicator light--it's a single. It only fires when left is going--not on the right.

There is a green wire and a black w/ white stripe. Apparently I was wrong thinking it was a simple voltage feed in the green and the blk/wht wire was ground.

Is it a reverse feed? Meaning green is hot with the left signal and blk/wht is hot for the right?

    Anyone know?

Black white stripe is the ground Green to right signal & their should be a black wire for the left signal. Voltage is feed to the turn signal module & flasher first then to the signal light

If you have a single bulb in the instrument panel, it is fed by two hot wires from the turn signals. The indicator bulb acts as a current limiter and uses the turn signals on the other side as a ground wire. When the left turn signals are on, the indicator will also light, but won't pass enough current to light the right-side signals, so it uses them as a ground. Same thing for the other side.

If you want to use a single LED for your indicator, there is no problem, as long as you use a couple other LEDs to feed it.

Here is a diagram I did for somebody doing the same thing some time ago. It only shows the lights, not the wires that come from the controls, etc., but it shows the original setup with a standard bulb, then how to wire in two LEDs that will allow the use of a single LED in the instrument panel.

        Thanks!

It looks like back to the e store for a couple of diodes and then for my own education, into the looms. (I realize I don't have to do that to get it working, but want to understand how it's wired.)

LED's have a lot lower resistance than lightbulbs....you might need to put a ballast resistor across the LED leads (about 10 ohms or so) or else you might burn your relay, especially if it's a thermal relay.

              Hi,

Mr. Matchless wrote up a great guide on how to convert your gauge cluster to LED lighting. You can grab a copy from his Mediafire page:

MediaFire is a simple to use free service that lets you put all your photos, documents, music, and video in a single place so you can access them anywhere and share them everywhere.

...or get the copy I keep on my website in the "Electrical Odds and Ends" page.

This guide is for the gauges with both left and right turn signal indicators. If Mr. Steve doesn't mind, I'll add his picture to the collection on my site too.

              Thank you for your indulgence,

              BassCliff

                Cliff, I never have minded.

                My mother will verify that.

Add the picture to your collection, if you want.

Turn signal conversions are next year's project. With two-year old twins, and moving I thought I was ambitious by doing tires, the instrument panel, gauge faceplates, a Wolo horn and an additional LED tail/stop light on the backrest before riding season.

It was too short last year going through the carbs and then a head gasket replacement.
