    83 GS550 idles fine until...

    I got my bike to idle very nicely when its on the side stand and then when I tip it up it goes from 1000 to 2000...I checked the cable its not binding or moving when I tip her up...any suggestions?

    Suggestion: May want to provide greater detail for better responses. For instance, which cable are you referring to - throttle or choke?

    As a guess, based on rising RPM's, I would suspect a vacuum/air leak. Rising RPM is a classic sign that these picky bikes are somehow getting more air than they want in the mix.

      Could be an air leak as suggested,

      Have you checked your plugs to see if they are white?

      Double and triple check that your cables are routed per the manual and that they are not pulling or binding ( you just never know ).

        Carb related. Either float or you just aren't seeing the cable move.

          Thanks guys...I finally got it to run really great yesterday. The throttle handle was sticking, lubed it up and it snaps back.

          I had my fuel mixture screws turned too far out. I put them back to the 1 5/8ths turns out and then adjusted the armature (carb butterfly's) and the idle until it was idling perfect. I can rev it and it drops back to a normal idle now, before it would run on for a second when I let go of the throttle. If I get it to idle perfectly would I still need to balance the carbs?

            Generally the process is the other way around. It idles perfectly because the balance is close / perfect. If you're satisfied with the performance and you don't want to do the sync procedure, well, just enjoy the bike. When a carb set has been messed with, though, there's usually room for improvement in the balance department.

              Balancing the carbs is always a good idea since it will make starting easier and run smoother, just double check your plug color to make sure your mixture is right, it's too easy to go lean on these carbs and burn a valve or worse a piston!
