    Can't keep it going

    79 GS425L
I can get it started ok. It idles beautifully for around 5-10 min. and then it stalls and I can't get it going after that. It will start again, but will only run for less than a minute and won't stay going no matter what i do.
    Would skunky gas cause this?
    Any other idea's?

Fuel filter or screen in petcock. Runs long enough to empty the bowls, then dies. With a mostly clogged filter or screen, it takes a bit for enough to seep through to fill them back up, then you can start it for a little bit again.

    Just a suggestion.

      Thanks for the reply.
I recently added an in-line fuel shut off and the fuel hose i used between the shutoff and filter is very short making it so that they are touching each other. Would this maybe cause my problem? Should i spread them out a bit further?

Shouldn't be a problem. Did the problem start after adding the fuel shut off? Is the filter clear, where you can see if it has gas in it?

Also...are there any kinks in the fuel line?

no kinks in the fuel line. Filter is clear, i can see the gas in it.
I added the shut off over the winter. Today was the first day that i had it going for any longer than 5 min.

What kind of in-line filter ? What does the inside of the tank look like ?

Just one I got from a dealer. Inside of tank is pretty clean. I can see the gas coming through the filter and down the line into the shut off when it's running. The flow seems ok.

Sometimes the little hole in the fuel bowls gets clogged, because it's so small, try checking that to see if your getting too little fuel.

Just because you asked I would suggest you change it. No sense beating yourself up if its something easy.

Also try it with the fuel cap off. Maybe its not venting the tank properly.

Try it on prime and see what happens.

                        got some new gas.
Still having problems. Tried starting today. Couldn't keep it going. stalled out. I pulled the plugs. Right side soaked with gas, left side white colored. I am really getting frustrated with this thing. what should i do?

                          Hi Mr. ReedZ,

If your fuel system is clean you shouldn't need an inline filter. They are known to cause fuel delivery issues. Are you sure you are using a filter meant for a gravity-fed system (like a lawn mower)? Are your carbs clean? Have you checked the float heights?

                          Thank you for your indulgence,

                          BassCliff

                            Hi there,
I have no problem with fuel flow through the filter. I had orginally put it on there because i could not get rid of a bit of dirt that i had in the bottom of the tank. I don't think the fuel flow is an issue. I tried getting it going again the other day. I can get it going, but it won't stay going. Pulled the plugs, left one is white, the right side is soaked with gas. I'm going to do what you've suggested and check float levels and I'm going to replace the plugs as well. We'll see if that helps. Any other suggestions on top of what i'm planning to do?
                            Thanks

Do what Dave said, run the bike with the fuel cap released/open to make sure you get enough gravity pressure above the fuel in tank. See if it then runs for more than 15 mins. But you will still have to figure out why the plug on one side is wet and the other side is white and dry. Do as Cliff said, check the float level on both carbs. hope you don't have fuel in the oil.
