what 850 exhaust?
Picked up a set of used stock 850 complete exhaust and have not seen this configuration with a pressed steel "H" crossover section. The system fits my bike fine but has some extra mounting tabs and covers my crankcase drain??

Well, we don't know what you've got, because you haven't told us...
Is your bike a G or GL? What year is it?
The exhaust is probably from a later model. Seems odd that it's blocking the oil drain -- they're all in the same place. Is the crossover section in the right place?
If you have a G, is the exhaust from a GL? (Or vice-versa.)
GL exhausts are a bit shorter and are a megaphone shape at the end. G exhausts have a taper at the end.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

...actually, the '79 and '82 850 G's have different part numbers for the oil pan. Not sure what's up with that...Ed

My '83 GS850G (with the '83 exhaust) is wearing an '81 engine, and there are no drain plug issues.
But if the the OP has a '79, perhaps that could explain things. Perhaps not.
I have a '79 engine sitting in my garage, but I don't feel like getting out a ruler and crawling around on the floor just now.
I'm pretty sure the later engines had the crossover under the engine, but I don't know exactly when this started. Some in the middle years had mounting bolts through the crossover into the oil pan, but these were gone in '83 and possibly '82. There are also some variations between the GL and G models.
I don't really feel like trawling through several parts fiches just now either...1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

I have a 79.
The exhausts are tapered at the ends with a crossover section underneath. I posted some pictures of the project today. Anyway, I will have to remove the center headers and the crossover if I want to drain my oil. Or maybe I'll pump it. I don't want to go out to the shop right now, either, so I'll get some more info tomorrow. see album http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...hp?albumid=378

I have two 850s with stock exhaust, an '81G and an '82GL, both of them have crossovers with bolt holes to attach them to the oil pan.

the crossover did start in '80. The '79 exhaust does not have the crossover and the mounts on the oil pan so it sounds like someone put on a '80 or newer exhaust and changed the oil pan so they could attach the exhaust to it. I believe the '80 oil pan will fit the '79. I was thinking about doing this for my '79 but did not find a decent '80 exhaust yet as my exhaust is leaking some.1979 GS850G
