The new R1 and those motoGP bikes don't fire the cylinders in pairs like being discussed here. Those bikes use a special crankshaft, to go with the camshafts, and stagger the firing order in a special way. Check this video for more info... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvTXM...layer_embedded

The main advantage to this type of engine is to optimize traction in big HP applications, or where traction is limited. Seems like a silly idea for a GS bike unless maybe for ice racing.

Just to clarify: I don't plan to do it. I just thought it was an interesting idea I had (an apparently others have had it too).

      Thanks, good discussion.

Skyboy, I for one understood that this was a discussion of possibilities.

So Please don't try to put that R1 crank in your bike.

A good explanation of those crazy cranks: http://www.ashonbikes.com/cross-plane_crank

Having 2 cycinders fire at the same time would be harder on the transmission and primary due to having twice the torque hitting it half as often.

I wanna do it and have a thumper, just have to cut the crank and weld it back together, maybe with solder to save a few bux.

on a standard gs1000 for instance, would it not just turn it into a 1000cc twin, but with the load spread over a 4 cylinder crank rather than a twin?

Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

Crap, I just cut my cams and welded them back together and it won't run. Can someone help?

Your standard in line 4cyl crankcase is not designed to have 2 cylinders firing at the same time, so the end result would be reduced reliability.....and probably double the vibration of a parallel twin

Ducati tried something similar with their first gen GP engine (they had a V4 with each bank of cyls firing together) but they found it destroyed the bottom ends quite rapidly - they then went to a conventional V4 firing order (and have been quite competitive ).
                      Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

                      Past:
                      VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....
