    Ignition Coil Overheating

    When I ride hard on the highway - high speed, high revs - The bike will shut down on me. It seems like 2 cylinders cut out, and then shortly after the other 2 cut out. Can Ignition Coils Overheat???


    I pull to the side wait 15 minutes and once it started back up. The second time I had to get towed home after 2 hours of trying. The battery is not dead - plenty of charge. But the next day - cranked her over and took right off. The gas is fresh and I've been through 3 tanks since putting her up for winter. I can run the bike for 8 hours with no problems putzing around the back roads and going easy on her. What gives?



    Thanks for reading everyone. Its a 1982 GS850G with 29k on it. It was sitting for a loooong time until i finally got it running last summer. I put on a Dyna S ignition, hit the usual suspects and it now runs well. The coils are stock and I don't want to dole out the cash for Dyna coils if I don't have to. Any Advise?

    If you have a multi-tester you can check resistance of the coils. On the primary side you want to see 3-5 ohms. Then check the secondary side by placing one probe in each plug cap for 1 and 4 then 2 and 3. You want to see 30k-50k ohms on the secondary side.

    You can pick up used coils from a gsxr, Katana, or Bandit from Ebay for about $30 any day of the week if you need them. The latest GSXR coils won't work, they use individual coils on each plug. If they look like yours they will work.

      This exact thing has happened to me when the spark plug gap was a little too big. (On another bike with a weak ignition system, this also happened and using a narrower than spec gap solved it until I replaced the coil died completely a few months later.)

        I had a gs750 that would do the same thing. It drove me crazy because I went through everything (including testing coil resistance) several times. After it cut out, if it sat for a while, it would start up and run fine again.

        I finally figured it out when it cut out on me in my driveway. I quickly grabbed my multimeter and checked the coils while they were hot. One of them read infinite resistance on the primary side. Once it cooled down, it read normally.

        I swapped that coil out with one off my GS700 parts bike, and never had a cut out problem with it again.

                Well I have the coils ordered. When I bought the bike it looked to be a new petcock assembly. Once I get them I'll test the coils to make sure they are good, put them on, and once the weather is right I'll max er out and keep everyone posted.
