    Rubber Things Between Engine Fins...

So I was cleaning up my (disgustingly dirty) engine on my 1000G tonight, and I noticed that between the taller fins on the inside of the engine that there are what appears to be little rubber spacer type things in there.

Are these spacer things supposed to be in there?? Does it matter if they are in there??

    Thanks!!

They are there to dampen potential ringing of the fins.

I have never heard the ringing, but it might be in a frequency range where my hearing is reduced.

Sweet. So you're saying if I take them all out that there's a possibility that my bike will not only make sounds through the rust holes in it's exhaust, but also it will make some kind of high pitched ultra obnoxious sound that only certain individuals can hear??

They are SOOOO coming out tomorrow night!!!!

They were place in there so the vibration of the fins doesn't cause them to fracture and break off. You have seen the ones with the corners missing.

Pick 'em out and throw 'em away. Nothing will break off.

I picked mine out about 70,000 miles ago...
