    Valve clearence

Just wondering If tight valve clearence would possibly be tapping sound I hear on take off.Been trying to find out source of noise for a while, thought It might have been timing or fuel mixture, but have checked that out.the Guy that put it together said the valve had to be set tight because of after market cams.I can hardly get .001 feeler gauge in gap 81 gs 11000. it only makes that sound on moderate to hard throttle if you know what i mean?????

My understanding is that aftermarket cams will make more noise than stock cams. Of more importance I think is our comment about "hardly get .001 feeler gauge in gap". This throws a red flag since the clearance should be far more than that I think. I suggest some more research on this matter.

Aftermarket cams run pretty much the same clernce as stock. Rockers and guides have to be modified with some of the higher lift cams. What cams and what do you know about the work the guy did? .001 is too tight and the valves probably aren't seating right with a hot engine.

You don't have enough clearance! Figure out what cams you have & then research cam manufacturers web sites for the correct clearance specs on your cams. Aftermarket cams USUALLY use a little bit more clearance than stock cams. Ray.

I would not even run that engine with valves set to .001. Thats FAR too tight for an air cooled 1100.

First, Like everyone else said Adjust the valves properly.
The noise you describe could be pinging (detonation).
