    79 gs1000 help

Am I suppose to have an ignitor? I'm rewiring my bike from a box and in my manual it shows an ignitor but I don't have one. Any and all help will be apppreciated.

79 was the last year for points. What do you have under the points cover (small forward cover on the right side of motor)? Pics would help

I thought I had points. Its just a couple triggers. I also noticed the manual I'm using was printed in 80. Know where I can get an electrical diagram for a 79gs1000?

pics of ignition would help. Someone may have replaced the points with an elec. ign.

its all factory stuff. i was confused because the schematic i was working off of was for an 80. now i gotta find the right schematic. would an 850 and 1000 be the same? im pretty sure i read somewhere they were the same.

Take a look here and see if you can find what you need.

            Good luck!

It's not factory installed - some one has changed it from points to whatever you have

its all factory stuff. I just had the wrong wiring schematic. It has two contact breakers under the cover. Would an 850 be the same schematic as a 1000? I can find them for 850s but not 1000. All of the wire colors match up.

Okay - you have the factory points set up, there is not an ignitor

                      I don't think I understand your question

Is this a basket case bike that you are trying to get the wires run to the right place?

                      Are you rewiring the ignition?

Yeah its a basket case I got off of a guy locally. He took it all apart to bob it and I'm making since of this wiring mess that was created. Basically i'm doing the same. All I am doing electrical wise is making it run, and charge headlamp and tail light. I work at a local chevy dealer as a tech, i'm pretty savvy when it comes to electrical and wiring. My problem I was using a schematic for a 1980 when I have a 1979... completely different ignition set ups.

hahaha yup... its true. I got my start tinkering with engines on a 1972 cb100 when I was about 13. I've been around some points before.
