Oil in gas
I have now drove my bike for about 20 miles and after it has sat over night I noticed the oil level is slightly higher and there is a light gas smell coming out of the oil fill cap. I know the petcok is operated by engine vacum and the bowl floats are supposed to shut off the flow. I think my problem is in the petcok, or is it the gas that is remaining in the fuel line between the petcok and carbs slowly seeping into the engine because the floats are not doing their job. It stops after a while or my gas tank would be empty over night if it were my petcok, right?

A little bit of oil in the gas won't do much besides smoke a bit, but your situation seems to be a little gas in the oil.
You really need to change the oil and the filter before running the bike.
(You should also let us know what bike we are talking about, HINT, HINT.)
You need to have two failures to get that much gas in the oil.
1. The petcock has to allow gas past when it's not wanted.
2. The floats are either too high or stuck to allow gas past when it's not wanted.
You can check the petcock by removing the gas line from the petcock to the carbs and installing another line that empties into a suitable container. Use another small piece of tubing to connect to the vacuum port. Suck on the vacuum line, observe the flow from the gas line. When you stop sucking, the gas flow should stop. If it doesn't, that's one of your problems. Move the petcock lever from ON to PRI to see if it flows, then turn it back to see if it stops.
To check the floats for operation and operating height, you will have to remove the carbs and remove the float bowls to inspect them.

Could also possibly be a bad diaphragm in the petcock allowing the fuel to leak through the diaphragm, run through the vacuum line, then past the rings into the crank case.

Opps.
Its an '83 650 Katana. I'll check out the petcok tonight and pull the carbs. I need to put larger main jets in the carbs anywhay because it has 4 to 1 exhaust and is running a little lean.
