    threads striped out

    I have abolt striped out on my heads for my pipes. what should i do quick fix and find another head to rebuild and replace at a later date?

    If you cannot install a thread insert or retap for a new bolt yourself, the head will need to go to a machine shop and have the work done.

      Hopefully it's one that you can access without pulling the motor. Drill, tap and insert heli-coil.

        Helicoils will be difficult to use in the header area due to the heat, The aluminum will expand and contract more than the HC will lending to loosening and pulling out. Depending on how bad the hole is, you could tap to the next size up. I cant remember off hand but I think its a 10mm now so a 12 wouldnt be too large to step up to. Or if you have to remove the head, you could have the hole filled and redrilled and tapped.

          I think you will find that the exhaust bolts are 8mm. So he could go up to 10mm if that works out for him.

              thanks guys i found it to be a 8mm bolt so i am going to a 10mm threaded bolt.the leak is driving me crazy.

                I have also heard of people drilling the bolt & going down a size to 6mm. There's only meant to be 12lb of torque on those bolts so I guess a 6mm would hold it.

                  Hmmm thats odd. Mine are 10mm. Its got me wondering if rethreading to the larger size isnt what has happened to my little junkyard rescue ride.

                    How did this go?
                    My GS450L had one missing and one that looked like it was coming undone.. when I tightened it, it sheared off

                    The pipe is still on firm but it's just a matter of time.
                    Did you drill smaller or go one size up?

                    Real bummer as I spent forever getting it running nice.. I took her for a 100 mile trip and was about to proclaim "I HAVE A RIDER" but this is not good.
